Description

Immerse yourself in the splendour of the Egypt of the pharaohs on a journey through the millennia, revealing a culture as enigmatic as it is captivating.

To tell you about the cosmogony and genesis of the world, the sacred forces of the gods come to life on the walls of the Atelier des Lumières to reveal the birth of humanity on Earth.

Your journey continues with the Nile, the source of all life in Egypt, which fills the many sumptuous bas-reliefs, paintings and ancient papyrus. Explore the daily life of the Egyptians, punctuated by the floods of the sacred river and its lush flora and fauna.

Contemplate the construction of the most beautiful prodigies of ancient architecture, the masterly and mysterious pyramids. The Sphinx stands majestically in front of these exceptional buildings, guardian of the tombs of the eternal kings.

The formidable perenniality of Ancient Egypt is intimately linked to the pharaohs who reigned over the unified kingdom of Upper and Lower Egypt. Discover the legacy of the pharaohs Khephren, Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Akhenaten and Nefertiti, through monumental sculptures.

Explore the hundreds of temples dedicated to countless deities, from Louxor to Abu Simbel. These cultural, spiritual, economic and political centres celebrate life and death during grand and impressive processions.

You can then take a thrilling dive into the Valley of the Kings, home to the Tutankhamun tomb. The Valley of the Queens reveals exceptional tombs in shimmering colours.

As the cycle of life draws to a close, you are led into the beyond as you approach the Astronomical Ceiling of Dendera, an intriguing representation of the cycle of life rising 15 metres from the ground. As the journey finally ends, nothing is really over yet!

Exhibition The Orientalists. Ingres, Delacroix, Gérôme

In the second part, for 10 minutes, explore the mysteries of the Orient. In the 19th century, Western painters, drawn by the enigma of the Orient, opened the doors to a pictorial expedition to these distant lands. The Orientalists, including Delacroix, Gérôme, and Ingres, depicted an exotic world of striking reliefs and spectacular colours.

Delacroix's carnets de voyage immerse you in the play of shadows, light and the aromas of spices. Discover the luxurious settings created by other masters such as Constant and Vernet, inviting you into the ruelles of oriental cities, sumptuous palaces and unforgiving deserts. From scenes of hunting, enigmatic moucharabiehs to harems, all the way to Ingres's La Grande Odalisque, live the Orientalist dream. This ephemeral and idealised dream finally takes you back to the Parisian salons of the 19th century.
