Description

THE COURTAULD COLLECTION: A VISION FOR IMPRESSIONISM

The exhibition presents the collection of English industrialist and patron Samuel Courtauld, representing one of the most significant collections of impressionist painters, gathered together in Paris for the first time in 60 years.

The exhibition bears witness to Samuel Courtauld’s extreme standards and artistic commitment. It brings together some 110 works, including 60 paintings and graphic pieces, all having once belonged to Samuel Courtauld and mostly kept at the Courtauld Gallery or in various public and private international collections. It also presents a set of 10 watercolours by J.M.W. Turner which belonged to Samuel Courtauld’s brother, Sir Stephen Courtauld.

THE COLLECTION OF THE FONDATION: A VISION FOR PAINTING

The Fondation presents a new selection of 70 pieces from its collection, gathering 23 international artists who take us on a journey from the 1960s to today all around one central theme: painting.

It is addressed in all its diversity: figurative or abstract, expressive or distanced, while large bodies of work are contrasted with each other. Rooms dedicated to Joan Mitchell, Alex Katz, Gerhard Richter, Ettore Spalletti, Yayoi Kusama and Jesús Rafael Soto alternate with thematic series based around abstraction, space and colour. This display shows how painting is continuously reinventing itself and breaking its own rules, drawing on current reproduction techniques.
