- Manga. An art of its own!
Description
The exhibition Manga. An art of its own! at the Guimet Museum traces the deep roots of manga, revealing its links with traditional Japanese arts such as ukiyo-e, painted scrolls and kamishibai. Through a rich selection of ancient and contemporary works, visitors discover how this narrative art form has developed over the centuries, blending satire, street theatre and illustrated press. This first exhibition highlights the cultural foundations that gave rise to a global phenomenon.
Tezuka, pop culture and haute couture
The second part of the exhibition pays tribute to Osamu Tezuka, pioneer of modern manga, whose works such as Astro Boy revolutionised graphic storytelling. At the same time, iconic manga characters interact with the museum's classic collections, creating a bridge between heritage and pop culture. Manga-inspired fashion designs enrich this artistic encounter, illustrating the influence of manga far beyond the printed page.
The visual heritage and universality of manga
Finally, the exhibition devotes a room to Hokusai's iconic print, The Great Wave, and its many reinterpretations in manga and Western comics. This nod to classical Japanese art highlights the visual power and universality of manga, which has become a global artistic language. This exhibition is an invitation to explore the many facets of a living art form, between memory and modernity.
