Description
“I want to be a machine”: the phrase is famous, yet it has often overshadowed a key reality of Andy Warhol’s work. Long before screen printing and well beyond his early Pop Art years, drawing was his first and most constant form of expression. From 16 September 2026 to 10 January 2027, the Musée du Luxembourg places line and hand back at the heart of the story with Andy Warhol. The Line and the Image, an exhibition revealing an artist deeply committed to gesture, line and graphic experimentation.
A fresh take on Pop Art
From his first self-portrait in 1942 to the monumental drawings of the 1980s, the exhibition brings together nearly 150 drawings, alongside paintings, screen prints, photographs and archival documents. Portraits, genre scenes, advertising imagery and iconic figures show how drawing allowed Warhol to explore his major themes while testing colours, compositions and ideas. Structured around five thematic sections, the exhibition highlights his technical innovations, transfers, broken lines, stencils and collages, and the constant dialogue between art, photography and popular culture.
Stepping into The Factory
By showcasing rarely displayed works, the exhibition invites visitors into the very fabric of Warhol’s creative process. Behind mechanical repetition, the hand is always present. Behind the icon, a sharp and inquisitive eye. A compelling exhibition that offers a new way to rediscover Andy Warhol, through the very foundation of his work: a line, and a thousand images.
