Description
From 5 December 2025 to 10 January 2026, the Théâtre du Châtelet will become a temple of celebration and tolerance. With flamboyant sets designed by Pierre-André Weitz, dynamic choreography by Ivo Bauchiero and musical direction by Christophe Grapperon, La Cage aux Folles promises an immersive and joyful experience.
A cult musical revisited
First performed on Broadway in 1983, La Cage aux Folles is an iconic work by Jerry Herman (music and lyrics) and Harvey Fierstein (libretto), adapted from the play by Jean Poiret. Winner of numerous Tony Awards, it celebrates diversity, love and acceptance. For this new French production (with English surtitles), the Théâtre du Châtelet has entrusted the direction to Olivier Py, who has reimagined the plot in the world of cabaret, with a vibrant and contemporary translation. The show, starring Laurent Lafitte in the role of Zaza, promises to be a highlight of the Parisian cultural season.
An ode to freedom and love
On stage, Zaza sings ‘I Am What I Am’, a hymn to identity and pride. But behind the glitter, the story tackles profound themes: same-sex parenting, transmission, and the quest for recognition. The plot follows Georges and Albin, a couple who own a cabaret in Saint-Tropez, as they face prejudice when their son wants to marry the daughter of a conservative politician. Olivier Py infuses this production with a political and poetic dimension, resonating with contemporary issues surrounding LGBTQI+ rights. [
The promise of a festive evening of flamboyance and emotion at the Théâtre du Châtelet.
