Description

Since the 1980s, Pierre and Gilles have photographed several generations of stars, presenting them in a new and spellbinding way. The two artists are today involved in creating an exhibition designed as a musical and visual installation, revealing the secrets of their “idol factory”.

CLASSICAL ART AND THE UNDERGROUND

Influenced by the iconography and structures of classical art, the duo Pierre and Gilles have earned their place in the history of western portrait art. At a time when pop idols are taking the place of religious icons and when the mystical atmosphere of religious songs has given way to the frenzied atmosphere of rock concerts, Pierre and Gilles have reintroduced the religious aspect in their iconography, producing almost miraculous portraits, venerable in their own right, which seem to take on a life of their own. Influenced by the aesthetic features of an American underground scene imported into France in the late 1970s, Pierre and Gilles have built a world in which baroque art rubs shoulders with Hindu iconography and in which different imaginary aspects and periods combine.

POP PILGRIMAGES AND RELICS

The exhibition presents the love story between these two artists and music, taking the visitor on a pop pilgrimage in which musician-saints co-exist alongside relics, liturgical items and spin-off products, all from Pierre and Gilles’ studio. This previously unseen collection of items from the artists’ hangout explores their relationship to memory and nostalgia. It also helps understand how this “idol factory” works, thanks to hundreds of pieces of “evidence” (memorabilia, letters, autographs, videos, record covers and spin-off products).

AN ICONOCLASTIC MUSICAL PANTHEON

The world of Pierre and Gilles is comprised of an iconoclastic and sentimental pantheon, ranging from Étienne Daho to Stromae, from Sheila to Eddy de Pretto, from Sylvie Vartan to Nina Hagen, not forgetting Claude François, Marilyn Manson, Boy George, Madonna, Lio and Michael Jackson. Figures with a powerful symbolic value, enabling them to freely explore the sacred nature of the stars found in the hit parades.
