Description

Two hundred years after the invention of photography, the Bourse de Commerce is dedicating an exhibition of exceptional scale to this medium, which has transformed the way we see, preserve and convey the world. Entitled Remember Me, in reference to a work by Barbara Kruger which takes centre stage in the museum’s Rotunda, this exhibition brings together more than 70 artists and several hundred works from the Pinault Collection. From Gustave Le Gray to Wolfgang Tillmans, from Man Ray to Cindy Sherman, the exhibition spans nearly two centuries of photographic creation, creating a dialogue between images, eras and sensibilities that resonate across time.

A leisurely stroll amongst masterpieces and unexpected connections

Conceived as a visual ‘fugue’, the exhibition breaks free from any chronological framework. August Sander’s portraits are reinterpreted by Sherrie Levine; Gustave Le Gray’s seascapes engage in a dialogue with those of Eileen Quinlan; whilst the shadow of Marilyn Monroe, photographed by Richard Avedon, intersects with Cindy Sherman’s metamorphoses. As visitors move through the galleries, photography emerges as much as an art of composition as a vast reservoir of memories, capable of capturing the ephemeral and preserving the traces of time.

Images that demand to be looked at

At the heart of this bicentenary celebration, memory serves as the common thread running through the exhibition. Two major sections bear witness to this: the installation dedicated to Irving Penn, featuring more than 400 photographs that reveal his technical rigour and poetic power, and Raymond Depardon’s series devoted to French landscapes, shops and villages. Spanning personal archives, universal icons and contemporary perspectives, Remember Me reminds us that a photograph is never merely an image: it is also a presence that transcends time and continues to speak to those who view it.
