Description
To the north of Paris, the Porte de la Chapelle district is undergoing a visible transformation. But in this changing environment, one eco-site in particular is really breaking ground. Since its creation in 2011, Shakirail has spread joy and a sense of solidarity among visitors and locals alike. An inspiring cultural experience near the railway tracks of Gare de l’Est.
Making tracks to solidarity
Like its neighbour, CENTQUATRE, Shakirail breathes new life into vestiges of the past. Indeed, this alternative venue created by the Curry Vavart association occupies a disused training centre and a former train drivers’ changing room. The two buildings, of 800 and 600 m², are now used as artist residences, rehearsal halls, co-working facilities, technical workshops, a bike repair workshop and other community initiatives. Supported by SNCF and the Ministry of Territorial Cohesion, this third place is the happy holder of the Fabrique de Territoire certification label, which it obtained in 2021. This seal of approval recognises the site as a resource centre and key contributor to the promotion of the district. And with good reason, because Shakirail is more than just a place to visit, it is an active player of the 18th arrondissement. The site’s outreach artists host workshops in the priority districts of northeast Paris and frequently organise free activities both on and off the premises. An initiative supported by local aid and prevention organisations, as well as social landlords.
Ode to creation
At Shakirail, culture can be observed, learnt and experienced. Fancy bringing out your creative side? Go and meet the craftspeople at the jewellery, mosaic, ceramics and sewing workshops. Training sessions and courses are also available if you want to perfect your technique. There are opportunities to party too, with evenings devoted to music and togetherness: musical bingo, queer choir, community banquet and much more. Unless of course you prefer working with hoe and rake in the community gardens of this little green haven, a certified bird sanctuary and nature oasis.
After visiting, you may want to keep up-to-date with the latest news from Shakirail. Rest assured, the good vibes follow you beyond the 18th arrondissement. Check out Radio Shak, a series of podcasts that shine a spotlight on local creations and initiatives.
