Description

The Centre Pompidou in Paris has closed its doors for five years, but it continues to promote modern and contemporary art in the Paris Region.

In 2027, the town of Massy, south of Paris, will become the new capital of art when it welcomes the new Centre Pompidou Francilien – Fabrique de l'Art / Musée national Picasso-Paris, an ambitious project led by the Ministry of Culture, the Centre Pompidou and local authorities. This new hub for conservation, creation and transmission is part of a cultural decentralisation initiative aimed at making art accessible to all and promoting France's artistic heritage.

An art factory open to the world

This 30,000 m² centre will not be a simple warehouse: it will embody a living art factory, where works will be preserved, restored, studied and exhibited. Visitors will be able to discover the behind-the-scenes world of conservation, attend participatory workshops, artistic performances, screenings and meetings with professionals from the art world. An inclusive, intergenerational programme will promote access to culture for all.

Sustainable and inspiring architecture

Designed by the PCA-STREAM agency, the building will blend harmoniously into Blanchette Park, with environmentally friendly architecture. A wooden walkway, reminiscent of the ‘Chenille’ at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, will connect the public spaces, while green terraces, a café-bookshop and a tree-lined promenade will invite visitors to stroll and enjoy the art.

Cultural influence for the Paris Region

This new site will strengthen the cultural influence of Essonne, in synergy with the Paris-Saclay university hub and local stakeholders. It will house the reserves of the Centre Pompidou (140,000 works) making it one of the largest centres for the conservation of modern and contemporary art in Europe.
