Description

The paintings and objects on display in the former study of Bishop Bossuet prove how much the work of the famous 17th-century orator and theologian is still admired today

While the temporary exhibitions are held in the lower rooms of the building, which dates back to the first half of the 12th century, the first floor houses the museum’s permanent collections, which are regularly enhanced through new donations.

Art through the centuries

The 16th century is represented by a Deposition from the Cross by Frans Floris (Antwerp, 1519-1570), while the works of painter Jean Senelle a native of the town, offer a unique perspective on the 17th century. The paintings of Bon Boullogne, Noël Coypel, François Verdier, Jean Tassel, and the Le Nain brothers complete this illustration of the Grand Siècle.

The 18th century is showcased through the works of Carle Van Loo, Jean-François de Troy and Charles-Antoine Coypel, while the 19th-century collection is richly stocked with paintings by the likes of Jean-François Millet, Charles Daubigny, Alexandre Decamps, and Jean-Léon Gérôme…

Finally, the decorative arts are represented by a few beautiful pieces of Louis XV and Louis XVI-style furniture from the former collection of the bishops of Meaux.
