Description
From 17 September 2025 to 11 January 2026, the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris is hosting an exceptional exhibition: Soulages, Another Light. This retrospective highlights a little-known but fundamental aspect of Pierre Soulages' work: his paintings on paper. Through 130 works created between the 1940s and the early 2000s, including 25 never before exhibited, visitors are invited to rediscover the artist in a practice that is intimate and essential to his visual language.
Paper as a field of experimentation
From 1946 onwards, Soulages explored paper with remarkable freedom. He applied walnut stain—a material prized by cabinetmakers—for its transparency, opacity and luminosity. This contrast with the white of the medium gave rise to works of striking intensity. The artist sometimes added ink or gouache, often in small formats but with intact formal power.
A rare and precious exhibition
Long kept in the artist's studio, these works on paper have rarely been brought together in a separate exhibition. Thanks to exceptional loans from the Soulages Museum in Rodez, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of the master of outrenoir, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 102.
