Description

Renowned worldwidé for its stone monuments, Khmer art** also produced an important bronze statuary, the knowledge of which has been the subject of spectacular advances thanks to recent excavations.

A journey through time and the art of bronze

The exhibition presented at the Musée Guimet from 30 April to 8 September 2025** highlights more than 200 works, including 126 exceptional loans from the National Museum of Cambodia**. The collection of statuary, objets d'art and elements of architectural decoration, as well as photographs, casts and graphic documents, place these works of art in their cultural context, as well as in an archaeological and historical perspective.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the statue of Reclining Vishnu from the Western Mebon, an 11th-century sanctuary discovered in 1936. This statue, originally over five metres long, is on display for the first time, with its fragments reunited after meticulous restoration.

The major role of the Khmer sovereign

Bronze, a noble alloy of copper, tin and lead, gave rise to masterpieces of statuary testifying to the loyalty of the Khmer sovereigns to Hinduism and Buddhism.

The exhibition explores the special role of the king, who commissioned major bronze castings from the Angkorian to the modern periods. You'll discover how art and power were intimately linked in Khmer culture.
