Raymond Devos Museum
Description
Discover the world of Raymond Devos in the house where he lived for over 40 years in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, just a few miles from the Palace of Versailles.
The museum extends across all 3 floors of the house, giving you an insight into the comedian’s life through many personal effects, his 17 musical instruments (all of which he knew how to play and used on stage) and notes letting you rediscover some of the most well-known sketches in his repertoire.
A historic house museum
The display areas located throughout the house are brought to the fore in the classic theatre colour combination of red and grey. In the hall, Devos’ two Molières sit side by side with the clown’s only academic achievement: his school leaving certificate. In the dining room, meanwhile, a large library is full of titles by his favourite authors, along with various other objects including a Meccano set and a statue of Rodin’s “The Thinker” that he used to take with him on tour.
A little further on, you’ll open a door onto the artist’s recreated dressing room with his box of red noses and clarinet. But you’ll have to delve even deeper to find Devos’ den – or rather, higher. Right up in the attic, in fact. It was there that he liked to hide himself away to work. There, you’ll be greeted by piles of books, cassette tapes, paintings, electric trains and other children’s toys, a grand piano, an advertising column and more. It’s one big, joyous jumble – just like the artist himself.
