Opera Bastille
Description
A symbol of French history
Located on the historic site of the former Paris-Bastille railway station, the Opéra Bastille opened on 13 July 1989, coinciding with the bicentenary of the French Revolution. This choice was not insignificant. On 14 July 1789, Place de la Bastille was the scene of the storming of the state prison by revolutionaries, an event that marked the beginning of the French Revolution.
Today, the Opéra Bastille is internationally renowned for its excellence in opera. It stands out for its avant-garde architecture: a curved and striking façade, a mixture of glass, steel and mineral materials. Its main auditorium, which can seat 2,700 people, harmoniously combines blue granite, wood and glass, offering unrivalled acoustic quality. The complex, covering 155,000 m², has state-of-the-art technical facilities: five mobile stage platforms and an adaptable orchestra pit.
A place of art and creativity
The Opéra Bastille is not just a venue for performances. It is also a vibrant space for life and creativity. Behind its walls, set construction workshops, costume sewing rooms and rehearsal rooms are bustling with activity. Craftsmen, artists and technicians work on the magic of opera all year round.
The Opéra Bastille's programme strikes a balance between classical works from the opera repertoire and contemporary creations. Discover this masterpiece through its performances. Or explore behind the scenes by taking part in guided tours. A place to discover and rediscover endlessly.
