Description
The Musée d'Orsay invites you to experience the Paris of the late 19th century through an exhibition entitled L’Art est dans la Rue. The first of its kind at the museum, this exhibition shines a spotlight on the development of posters illustrated in colour. As Paris built its reputation as a world-class economic and cultural hub, the poster became a visual communication tool and could be seen everywhere, on walls, pillars and even trams.
More than a mere advertising medium, the poster developed, with the help of well-known artists, into a work of art in its own right. The poster won its spurs when it was described as “wall art” by the art critic, Roger Marx. The exhibition takes a look at that key moment when art, advertising and the city came together to bring forth a visual revolution.
A voyage to the heart of the Belle Epoque
The poster serves several purposes, as described through various topics featured in the exhibition. It was a medium adopted by well-known artists with the emergence of the colour poster. Then and now, more than ever, it has always had a major impact on the urban landscape and the day-to-day lives of Parisians… Especially when it carries a strong message, be it for advertising purposes or to convey political ideas.
The tour features drawings, art objects, photographs and paintings, recreating the vibrant atmosphere that reigned on the streets of Paris at the time. Among the artworks on display are iconic creations by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, such as La Rue (1896), and Jules Chéret, pioneer of the modern poster, with pieces like Bal du Moulin Rouge (1889).
