- Gustave Fayet. Collector - Designer. Icons of Modern Art
Description
From 9 October 2026 to 8 March 2027, the Fondation Louis Vuitton dedicates all of its galleries to Gustave Fayet, Collector - Designer, a landmark exhibition that restores one of the most singular figures of the early twentieth century to his rightful place in art history.
Gustave Fayet, the man who saw modern art before everyone else
A passionate collector, artist, patron and entrepreneur, Gustave Fayet (1865-1925) was among the first to recognise the genius of Vincent van Gogh, champion Paul Gauguin and support Odilon Redon. More than a century after his remarkable collection was dispersed, nearly 250 major works are reunited for the first time, thanks to loans from dozens of museums and private collections around the world.
The exhibition brings together an exceptional group of 10 paintings by Van Gogh, 78 works by Gauguin and 88 works by Redon, alongside creations by Degas, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Morisot, Bonnard, Vuillard and Matisse. Highlights include the return to France of Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, unseen in a French exhibition since 1937, as well as a unique dialogue between Gauguin’s masterpieces, including The Yellow Christ and Breton Calvary.
A prolific creator finally revealed
Occupying the Fondation’s entire exhibition space, the retrospective also sheds light on a lesser-known side of Gustave Fayet: that of an artist of remarkable creative freedom. On the top floor, more than 325 of his own works, most of them never before shown publicly, reveal a rich and varied universe where painting, ceramics, illustration, textiles and decorative arts meet.
You will discover ceramics produced in his Béziers workshop, watercolours on blotting paper whose floral motifs verge on abstraction, as well as carpets, textiles and wallpapers that reflect his constant spirit of experimentation. Restored for the occasion, these creations reveal the ambition of a man who believed art should permeate every aspect of life. Through hundreds of artworks and documents, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on a forgotten pioneer whose influence continues to resonate throughout the history of modern and decorative arts.
Let yourself be carried away by the richness of Paris Region’s exhibitions.
