Description
From 11 September 2025 to 25 January 2026, the musée Jacquemart-André is devoting an exceptional retrospective to Georges de La Tour (1593-1652), a major but long-forgotten figure in 17th-century French painting. This exhibition, the first in France since 1997, brings together some thirty works from prestigious French and international public and private collections.
The brilliance of chiaroscuro
Influenced by Caravaggio but profoundly original, Georges de La Tour developed a unique style, combining rigorous naturalism, intense spirituality and mastery of light and shade. His nocturnal scenes, lit by candlelight, such as The Newborn and The Penitent Magdalene, are fascinating in their simplicity and emotional power. The exhibition highlights this singular aesthetic, in which light becomes a vehicle for transcendence.
A rare and powerful body of work
Few authentic works by La Tour have come down to us - barely forty - but their impact is immense. The thematic layout of the exhibition explores his favourite subjects: genre scenes, figures of saints, blind musicians or popular figures, all treated with monumental dignity. Each canvas reveals the painter's ability to capture the human soul in its deepest truth.
An unmissable event
In the refined setting of the musée Jacquemart-André, this exhibition promises a poetic and meditative immersion in the world of an artist who is both classic and resolutely modern. It's a rare opportunity to rediscover Georges de La Tour, the ‘prince of chiaroscuro’ whose light continues to illuminate our contemporary vision.
