Gardens of the Enlightenment, 1750-1800

From 5 May to 27 September 2026, the Grand Trianon hosts Gardens of the Enlightenment, 1750–1800, an exhibition that explores a new way of seeing nature during the Age of Enlightenment. Paintings, drawings, furniture and architectural projects trace the rise of the landscape garden freer, more emotional and far removed from the strict geometry of the French formal garden. An immersive layout invites visitors to discover landscapes designed to move, surprise and inspire quiet contemplation.

Journey through enchanted Gardens

The exhibition leads you through gardens imagined as journeys without movement: an ancient temple here, a mysterious grotto there, or an exotic pagoda further on. Inspired by distant lands and classical antiquity, these settings reflect a growing curiosity about the world and new ideas. Gardens also become places to live and share, spaces for walking, gathering and embracing a simpler elegance in harmony with nature.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is its dialogue with the gardens of the Trianon estate, encouraging visitors to continue their discovery outdoors. The Temple of Love, the Belvedere and the 'Hameau de la Reine' take on new meaning, like a life-sized extension of the exhibition.
