Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain
Description
Since its inception in 1984, the Fondation Cartier for Contemporary Art has embodied the boldness and commitment of private cultural patronage. Initially located in Jouy-en-Josas, then on Boulevard Raspail, it has continually reinvented itself to offer artists a space for freedom and experimentation. Today, it is located on Place du Palais-Royal, in an iconic neighbourhood that is home to the Louvre, the Bourse de Commerce, the Comédie Française and the historic gardens of central Paris. This new setting reinforces the cultural influence of the 1st arrondissement, which has become a veritable crossroads of the arts.
An architectural masterpiece by Jean Nouvel
Once again entrusted to architect Jean Nouvel, the transformation of the Haussmann-style building that formerly housed the Grand Hôtel du Louvre has given rise to an extraordinary exhibition space. Transparency, natural light and modularity are the watchwords of this visionary project. Covering more than 6,500 m², including 1,200 m² of mobile platforms, the spaces can be adapted to suit the works and installations, offering an evolving and immersive scenography.
This hybrid space, where art, architecture and innovation meet, becomes a living laboratory for artists from around the world. It embodies the Fondation Cartier's desire to push the boundaries of creation and offer visitors a unique sensory and intellectual experience.
A place of passage and sharing
Even before entering the building, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in art in the surrounding public spaces. The Valois Gallery, which leads to the main entrance, becomes an exhibition space in its own right, where the works interact with the architecture and everyday urban life. This inclusive approach, open to the city, reflects the Foundation's DNA: making art accessible, alive and connected to its time.
