Description

The musée Picasso-Paris presents the first French retrospective devoted to the work of the American artist Faith Ringgold.

Faith Ringgold, manifesto of a committed African-American artist

A major figure in the anti-racist and feminist fight in the United States, from the civil rights struggles to those of the Black Lives Matter, the African-American painter, famous across the Atlantic for her mosaic paintings and colourful quilts, had never before been the subject of such an exhibition in Europe.

The collection of major works presented as part of the exhibition on view in Paris until 2 July 2023, retraces the career and battles of the artist who was born in New York in 1930, and who got her start in Harlem, the epicentre of arts and revival. It was in the northern part of Manhattan, which between the wars became the symbolic capital of the cultural awakening of black communities, that she spent her childhood in a thriving community of creators, musicians, writers and thinkers.
She continued to live and work there as an artist and public school teacher for decades forming her artistic, cultural and family commitments. Her re-readings of modern art history led her to focus on artists across the Atlantic, and in particular on the Paris art scene of the early 20th century, the golden age for artists from around the world who gathered in the City of Light and in which Pablo Picasso, the author of the famous Demoiselles d'Avignon, was active. Her work is now seen as a real bridge between the rich heritage of the Harlem Renaissance and the current art of young black American artists.

A retrospective not to be missed!
