- Berthe Weill. Art dealer of the Parisian Avant-garde
Description
The Musée de l'Orangerie is dedicating an exceptional exhibition to Berthe Weill, a little-known but essential figure in the history of modern art. From 8 October 2025 to 26 January 2026, ‘Berthe Weill. Art dealer of the Parisian Avant-garde’ traces the career of this visionary woman who, in 1901, opened her gallery in Pigalle and devoted herself body and soul to promoting the artists of her time.
A gallery, revolutions and a woman ahead of her time
Weill was the first to sell works by Picasso even before her gallery officially opened. She organised the only solo exhibition of Modigliani's work during his lifetime and supported the Fauves, Cubists and artists of the School of Paris. Her credo, ‘Make way for young people,’ inscribed on her advertising card, sums up her commitment to emerging talent, often rejected by conservative institutions.
A hundred works for a rediscovered memory
The exhibition brings together a hundred pieces – paintings, drawings, sculptures, jewellery – by masters such as Matisse, Rivera and Freundlich, but also by female artists whom she defended without prejudice: Émilie Charmy, Suzanne Valadon, Hermine David… A vibrant tribute to her fight against sexism and xenophobia in the art world.
Belated but well-deserved recognition
Organised in partnership with the Grey Art Museum in New York and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, this retrospective is part of a series of exhibitions dedicated to influential art dealers. It highlights the workings of the 20th-century art market and the tenacity of a woman who, despite persecution and difficulties, never stopped believing in the power of creation.
