Basquiat x Warhol. Painting 4 hands
From April 5 to August 28, 2023, head to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in the heart of the Bois de Boulogne to discover the most important exhibition ever devoted to the works that Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol painted together.
Jean-Michel Basquiat - Andy Warhol, 2 major 20th century artists exhibited together in Paris
As a witness to their friendship and joint production, Keith Haring** (1958-1990) describes the 160 or so canvases painted "four-handed" between 1984 and 1985, of which some 100 are on show in the exhibition**, as a "conversation occurring through painting, instead of words" and two minds merging to create a "third distinctive and unique mind". And it is true that both Warhol and Basquiat express themselves in unison in these paintings. Basquiat finds in Warhol, whom he admires, a new artistic language, and Warhol returns to the large ensembles and painting alongside Basquiat.
In order to capture the art scene of downtown New York in the 1980s, individual works by each artist, as well as a body of work by others, from Keith Haring to Jenny Holzer to Kenny Scharf are also presented.
The famous series of photographs with boxing gloves taken by Michael Halsband for the poster of the exhibition of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol in 1985, also enriches the exhibition, which opens with a series of crossed portraits, Basquiat by Warhol, Warhol by Basquiat. It continues throughout the Foundation's galleries with the first collaborations between the two men, showing how their works interact. Beyond styles and forms, it also highlights crucial issues such as the insertion of the African-American community into the North American narrative, a continent in which Warhol was a leading manufacturer of icons.
