Musée vivant du chemin de fer

Working Railway Museum

Seeing and hearing steam trains is every child’s dream, so deeply are the locomotives and their billowing plumes of white smoke rooted in our collective imaginations. In Longueville, this dream can be made a reality thanks to the Musée Vivant du Chemin...

Description

For over forty years, AJECTA (a French youth association for the maintenance and conservation of vintage trains) has been bringing steam trains back to life. The organisation salvages the engines that traversed the countryside until the sixties, puffing out their pillowy white clouds and whistling their distinctive whistles.

The Longueville depot, located just a few miles outside the medieval city of Provins, serves as both a restoration workshop – for salvaging old engines – and a museum that fills with admiring, nostalgic crowds every Sunday. Watching a gleaming engine manoeuvre on a turntable truly is something to behold!

The 1911 roundhouse, which is a listed Historic Monument, is more than an engine shed: it’s a museum tracing the history of a whole chapter of transport and train travel through one of the biggest collections in France: twelve engines, several railcars and shunters, and around seventy cars and carriages, including cars from the famous Blue Pullmans. A visit to the Longueville site will immerse you in “the extraordinary atmosphere of the roundhouse. The tiled floors, the framework, the glass bays, the soot…just like that, you’re transported back to the 19th century, and the Est railway company’s old photographs. ”

Top tip: steam train trips run along the line from Longueville to Provins – check the timetable for more information.
