Description

As part of the America 250 year, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, the Archives Nationales is dedicating a major exhibition to Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. From 1 April to 14 July 2026, Lafayette, between France and America. History and Legend invites you to rediscover this fascinating figure, celebrated as a hero across the Atlantic yet viewed in a more ambivalent light in France. A soldier who enlisted at a very young age to fight alongside the American rebels, and a key figure in the early days of the French Revolution, Lafayette lived through nearly half a century of political upheaval, embodying an ideal of freedom shared by two continents.

A hero, a legend, and a controversial figure

The exhibition journey explores the full complexity of Lafayette’s character. Through archival documents, portraits, caricatures, engravings, and written texts, you will discover how Lafayette built his reputation and how his public image evolved over time. Celebrated in the United States as the “Hero of Two Worlds,” he became a more debated figure in France, sometimes criticized and often caricatured. This dual perspective, at the heart of the exhibition, sheds light on the rise of political celebrity at the end of the 18th century and invites reflection on how the great figures of history are shaped and remembered.

A free exhibition in a remarkable setting

Presented at the National Archives Museum, within the elegant surroundings of the Hôtel de Soubise, this free exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to explore Franco-American history through rare documents and compelling personal stories.
