The Château de Versailles presents the first major monographic exhibition devoted to the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659 - 1743), author of the most famous portrait of Louis XIV .

Description

First prize for painting at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, painter of the high nobility, men of the Church, magistrates, financiers, Hyacinthe Rigaud is above all the author of the most famous representation of the Sun King. This work, the original of which is kept in the Louvre Museum, is perceived as an emblematic image of the absolute monarchy, in the same way as the Château of Versailles itself.

The exhibition Hyacinthe Rigaud or the Sun Portrait presented by the château looks back at his career from his beginnings in Catalonia to his consecration in Paris, on his autoportaits painted throughout his life up to the majestic portraits of Louis XIV. The very incarnation of the Grand Siècle!
