Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain (place du Palais-Royal)
Description
Since its creation in 1984 by Alain Dominique Perrin, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain has established itself as a pillar of private cultural patronage. With its first space in Jouy-en-Josas and then its move to boulevard Raspail, the institution has constantly reinvented its spaces and its programming. This is why, by the end of 2025, the Foundation will have a new address on the Place du Palais-Royal, next to the Louvre and the Bourse du commerce. The move will create a particularly strong cultural hub in the heart of the 1st arrondissement.
A visionary architecture to sublimate art
To mark its 40th anniversary, the Fondation Cartier is writing a new chapter in its history with the opening of a new space on the Place du Palais-Royal opposite the Louvre (/en/musee-du-louvre). Entrusted once again to Jean Nouvel, this bold architectural project will be housed in a historic Haussmann building, the former Grand Hôtel du Louvre, which later became the Louvre des Antiquaires.
The space will incorporate the design principles so dear to the architect. Transparency, light and modularity will characterise the 6,500 m2 of exhibition space. In this concrete and steel playground, 1,200 m2 of mobile platforms will be used to modify the surfaces and the layout of the building.
This place of experimentation promises to redefine standards in order to focus on the Foundation's main mission: to offer artists the best possible framework for freedom of expression. For visitors, the experience will be as aesthetic as it will be intellectual, and in many ways, unprecedented.
While the space is taking shape, the experience begins outside the building. The Fondation Cartier and RATP have joined forces to take over the galerie Valois, which serves the future entrance to the new space. The exhibition Chantier, by Yann Kebbi, has been installed since October 2024. The artist's drawings cover the gallery walls, showing the men and women at work behind the scaffolding.
