Ever since the earliest adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula in 1921, the character of the vampire – among the most significant in popular culture – has fascinated the film-maker’s camera. Not only directors, but also actors – Coppola, Christopher Lee, Lugosi, Deneuve, Herzog, Bigelow, Browning, Adjani, Bowie, Pattinson and Tim Burton – have each, over the years, felt compelled to present their own celluloid visions of this sulphurous character.
Featuring around a hundred extracts from now-iconic films such as Nosferatu (1922), Nadja (1994), Blood and Roses (1960), Dark Shadows (2012) and Interview with a Vampire (1994), and including the noughties saga Twillight, and the Buffy series which influenced a generation in the 1990s, the exhibition Vampires, from Dracula to Buffy, also shows the extent to which the image of the vampire has influenced other artistic domains from fine art to photography, including literature and TV series.
And as the final nail in the coffin, the Cinémathèque exhibition is accompanied by a programme of meetings, conferences and screenings of legendary films. So hurry down there, but … keep your neck covered!
