Until 15/05/2022 / MUSEE NISSIM DE CAMONDO

The Musée Nissim de Camondo is hosting a display by Edmund de Waal: the first invitation of its kind ever extended to a contemporary artist by the unique memorial site. With the exhibition and accompanying book, de Waal hopes to add a new layer to a family home with a tragic fate: a fate closely echoing that of his grandparents in 1938 Vienna.

The Musée Nissim de Camondo is entirely devoted to the French decorative arts of the second half of the 18th century. It is home to some of the most beautiful items of furniture and objects from the time of Louis XV and Louis XVI: Turkish lounge chairs that belonged to Madame Élisabeth, the sister of Louis XVI; a La Savonnerie rug commissioned for the Grand Gallery of the Louvre; silverware gifted by Catherine the Great to her beloved Orloff; a writing desk made by

These masterpieces were gathered together by Moïse de Camondo (Istanbul, 1860-Paris, 1935), who entrusted architect René Sergent (1865-1927) with the task of building a private mansion inspired by the Petit Trianon in Versailles to house his collections.

Built between 1911 and 1914, it provided all the comfort and modernity expected from an early 20th-century house and remains the only fully-preserved example of a working private house on the Plaine Monceau.

The Musée Nissim de Camondo is part of MAD Paris, an original private institution comprising a specialist library, teaching establishments and another prestigious museum: the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, located in the Palais du Louvre in the very centre of Paris.
