  4. Musée d'Archéologie nationale - Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye

Description

The museum is located inside a castle whose origins date back to the 12th century. This former residence of the kings of France is still surrounded by the magnificent gardens designed by Le Nôtre, the creator of the gardens of Versailles, and by a gigantic 3,500-hectare forest. The adjoining royal chapel is a prized example of Gothic art.

The National Archaeology Museum, invaluable collections

Inside, the royal furniture has been replaced by jewels, crafts and armoury dating from the origins of the Roman Gaul era. You will discover in particular a representation of the first human face, “Lady with the Hood,” an ivory sculpture, dated 21,000 BCE. The museum offers tours and activities for children, and you can also discover the collection via a free mobile application, available in French and English.

After visiting the château and its collections, head for the terraced roof for an exceptional view across the entire estate and the Seine valley.

Discover the National Archaeology Museum through one of the treasure hunts in the Paris Region Adventures application specially designed for families and downloadable free of charge.
