Matisse, like a novel
In honour of Matisse’s 150th birthday, the Centre Pompidou is paying homage to the 20th-century icon with an exhibition that gives us the chance to see his work in a whole new light: through the lens of literature.
With over 230 pieces and 70 documents and records on display, it walks visitors through the key milestones of the artist’s unique career, spanning more than five decades. Matisse used to say: “The importance of an artist is to be measured by the number of new signs he has introduced into the language of art”. From painting and sculpture to drawing and engraving, Matisse was always looking for “words for each piece”. Like a long novel, the works of art displayed here offer us an incredible overview of the many techniques that he continued to hone throughout his career. This is a bright and bountiful exhibition, and a fantastic dialogue between artwork and the written word.
