Turn the back, see the back of, gossip behind someone’s back… This part of our anatomy definitely gets bad press.
The Palais Galliera, Paris’ fashion museum, is finally paying tribute to it by presenting Back Side, an off-site exhibition at the Musée Bourdelle, devoted to clothing seen from behind from the 18th century to present day. It encourages us to think about the perception of our own back and how it is viewed by people we meet. And also to wonder about other people’s backs. What can their back reveal about their personality? A court train, a backpack, the sensuality of lace, a straightjacket, some buttons… the exhibition presents around one hundred outlines and accessories ranging from Parisian haute couture to contemporary off-the-peg, coming from collections from the Palais Galliera and supplemented by a selection of work clothes and other uniforms.
These unique items are found around the whole museum, alongside works by the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle with highly muscular backs and slender profiles, providing an artistic dialogue that is unique in every aspect.
